Using Dell Boomi Extensions

Dell Boomi provides the concept and implementation of extensions to allow developers and administrators to have distinct values for different environments without having to use multiple connectors of the same type.

As an example in a given scenario where a Dell Boomi Process uses a disk connector to read a file but the file location changes from environment to environment.

1. Test Server file folder location: C:\TEST\Inbound
2. QA Server file folder location: C:\QA\Inbound
3. Production Server file folder location: C:\PROD\Inbound

If there is no good understanding of extensions by the implementation team they may have a separate connector for each environment and deploy each connection thereby consuming a license in your Dell Boomi AtomSphere. This will most likely look something like this:extblogdisk1

To be very clear: this approach does work but will consume three connections/licenses and does not leverage the best practice of the usage of extensions for variable runtime-set environment configuration parameters.

The disk specific file folder configurations would be contained in each Disk Connection as shown below here:extblogdirectories

When using the best practices approach for Dell Boomi the disk connections should only be created once generically and might look something like this in the Atom’s artifact explorer:

The point being there only needs to be one disk Connection that is configurable in the process as “Extended” with configuration values assigned at the time of deployment or at any time after deployment during run time.

Let’s create a very simple process that uses our Disk1 Connector and demonstrate how to configure the same disk connector for three environments.

The process might look something like this:

Excellent article. Much clearer than Boomi’s own documentation.
