Chosen as an advocate for Women in STEM

Most of my life I have been the only female in the room in a male-dominated profession.  No matter what obstacles I faced, I persevered and found myself at a great company called Tallan. I was honored when Ben Fischbein, a colleague of mine here at Tallan, approached me and acknowledged my achievements as a female programmer.  He shared his findings about the scarcity of women in STEM while offering me the opportunity to present to the students of Conard High School about the importance of women in these fields during their Computer Science Education Week.
To open my presentation, I wanted to connect with the students about why there is a gender gap in STEM.  I had asked the students what they had thought an artist looked like and I featured a picture of a painter, a musician, a male…

Microsoft Healthcare Bot Service for COVID-19 Webinar Series

Last year, our AI team was invited to learn about Microsoft’s new Healthcare Bot. The ability to quickly develop and modify this technology was incredible. The cloud-based service was built specifically using AI to empower and scale the healthcare industry with compliance top of mind, and healthcare-centric language built-in to start.
Our team was already familiar with the Microsoft Bot Framework so we signed on very quickly to become a Certified Bot Partner. We saw the opportunity to help both hospitals and out-patient clinics and offices, we even have a pre-COVID webinar, titled Enabling and Enhancing Patient Engagement in Healthcare published on our Youtube channel that highlights the basic features and benefits of this technology.
At the time, the market was a bit behind the technology. Things like concern about elderly patients interacting with a Chatbot, and fear of change.
Look at us…

2019’s Top 5: Most Viewed Blog Posts

Now that COVID-19 has completely derailed any strategy and subsequent plan to achieve Q1 goals and we are all continuing to adjust to the ‘new normal,’ we’re thrilled to present our curated list of Tallan’s top viewed blog posts of 2019.
It’s no surprise that the top two posts are both about developing in an Azure environment. Microsoft Azure was awarded a highly sought after contract from the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) in October of last year. You can read the statement published by the DOD here.
Importantly noted in the statement, is that the DOD has not aligned with any one vendor or provider for their cloud strategy efforts, “Today the Department of Defense has taken another step forward in the implementation of our Cloud Strategy with the award of an enterprise general-purpose cloud contract to Microsoft.  This continues our…

Tallan Attends Its First ALM LegalWeek Conference

A couple of weeks ago, Tallan attended its first ALM LegalWeek conference in New York City. With over 4,000 attorneys, c-suite executives, marketing and business development staff, exhibitors, and vendors registered, our team was looking forward to networking and the educational panels we had the opportunity to attend.
The event was divided into three separate ‘conferences,’ Legal CIO, Legal Tech, and Legal Business Strategy. We divided and conquered, and after day 1, one thing became clear: LegalTech has become mainstream. Firms are looking for out-of-the-box products and platforms to enhance processes, time-keep for ease of billing, foster eDiscovery, and generally optimize operations. There are vendors for nearly every ‘LegalTech’ you could imagine or need.
For the most part, they are internal. Save time by digitizing records, but if a firm cannot bill that time saved (not that attorneys perform administrative tasks anyway), then how…

CBIA Employment Law Conference: AI for HR Panel Recap

Last week, the Connecticut Business & Industry Association held its annual Employment Law Conference. Tallan’s SVP of Client Delivery, Doug Smith, spoke on a panel with Dan Schwartz, a Partner at Shipman & Goodwin and author of the CT Employment Law Blog.
Rather than pose questions to the panelists, Moderator Mark Soycher opted to poll the audience, and allow Doug and Dan to provide color commentary on Artificial Intelligence & Analytics for HR: Recruiting, Retention & Engagement.
This style panel allowed for continued audience engagement for a topic many seem to shy away from. I was pleasantly surprised by some of the answers I saw, and not all that surprised by others. The first two questions created a Word Cloud, so the audience was able to visualize what their peers were thinking. The very first question asked was, “What loathed HR task or responsibility would you love…

Poll Results Part II: Microsoft Healthcare Bot Webinar: Enabling and Enhancing Patient Engagement

You might have seen our post last week, Poll Results Part I: Microsoft Healthcare Bot Webinar: Enabling and Enhancing Patient Engagement.
If you have, I’m sure you’re absolutely chomping at the bit to find out how people answered the question at the end of the event.  Well, the answer options differ a bit based on the use-cases from Quest Diagnostics and Aurora Health Care.
This poll occurred after the presentation from Microsoft Health Care’s Adam Walker, and Tallan’s own Matt Kruczek. Adam spent time on the details the team focused on to ensure the Bot would be compliant and useful for the healthcare community (to include a built-in understanding of medical language). While Matt elaborated on 3 of the pilot programs.  One assists with triaging and symptom checking patients, one focuses on follow-up and discharge plan adherence, and the other centers on…

Poll Results Part I: Microsoft Healthcare Bot Webinar: Enabling and Enhancing Patient Engagement

Earlier this month, we partnered with Microsoft and hosted a live webinar focused on the new Healthcare Bot platform. The Product Lead from Microsoft Healthcare lent his time to Tallan to speak to the production of the framework for this Chatbot, while Tallan’s AI team discussed 3 cases where this Bot is already being used to benefit patient engagement.
In short, this Healthcare Bot Framework, as opposed to Microsoft’s traditional Bot Framework, was specifically created with Healthcare compliance laws in mind, and an understanding of “healthcare intents by leveraging built-in language models tuned to medical terminology.”
Because Conversational AI is still very much making a name for itself as a mainstream tool, we polled our audience at the beginning of the webinar, and the end.
The first question was focused on patient engagement challenges, specifically what they face at their organizations.  Our audience…

Microsoft Inspire Recap

Last week, a contingent from Tallan attended Microsoft Inspire.  This conference brings together the entire Microsoft Partner Network.  This network crosses borders, oceans, and mountain tops and what a sight it was. About 40,000 people gathered in “Hot Vegas” as they have aptly begun to refer to Las Vegas as, for 5 days of meetings, networking opportunities, Key Note speeches from Microsoft leadership – to include CEO, Satya Nadella himself, and even a concert to top it all off.
We learned a lot. We learned about Microsoft’s goals and priorities for their next fiscal year.  We learned about opportunities we have and can use to our advantage, being a member of the Partner Network. Most importantly, we fostered and made new relationships with individuals across the country. A group who we can and will continue to align and partner with as…

Live Webinar on 11/29! How Digital Strategy Helped American Financial Resources Compete

Do you have lunch plans next Wednesday, 11/29? If not, why don’t you plan to treat yourself to some takeout, and register for our Webinar.
Our Live at Lunch Webinar features Bill Packer, the Chief Operating Officer of American Financial Resources (AFR) and our New York Region Managing Director, discussing the strategy surrounding AFR’s decision to transition to cloud-based infrastructure.
In an hour we plan to ask our client’s advice on what to consider when prioritizing a digital strategy, whether he’ll give us some insight on what he could have done differently – if anything, and how this modernization has empowered his employees as well as his customers (both in the B2B channel, and direct-to-consumer) to take control.
I bet you wouldn’t believe that he was actually hired specifically for his attitude toward innovation to transition AFR.  Mortgage banks are in the financial…

Tallan Events in August and September 2018

Part of our marketing efforts at Tallan has always been centered on events.  Being able to provide a valuable service for developers and their managers is something that has generated brand recognition, trust from our peers and clients, and the opportunity to showcase the proficiencies of our (very) experienced Practice Leads.
Most of our events are technical in nature and have been produced as hands-on workshops for developers to advance and hone skills across different products and platforms.  But, we’re changing things up! We are in the process of developing content for managers as a precursor, or even post-event experience.
For instance, if you are a software developer or programmer and have signed up to attend one of our IoT Camps or Bot in a Day events, and you leave with a NEED for the technology at your business, we have your…
